How to correctly pull codes (W220)

Hello

I have purchased a 2004 S500 4-Matic. I'm very excited and collect the car later this week. It's in great shape with no dings or rust. Has service records with it and the seller indicates that the airmatic system was 'serviced' last year with a compressor being replaced.

I did what basic checks I could with the system. Top of front struts look fairly new and very clean. If I really, really look close I could see minor hairline cracks (one or two) but they didn't seem deep.

I was able to raise the car and then lower it and the two sport modes engaged without issue.

Anyway, I understand the risks and I want to be proactive rather than waiting for something to happen one day.

I am going to get a Carsoft system to plug into an old laptop to check any codes. My question is, is it best practice to first clear any codes and then check again later or should I be addressing whatever codes are being pulled when I first read it?

I ask this because if something has been repaired in the past by a amateur, maybe they didn't clear the codes.

Maybe this is a silly question - I have not used a code reader before. My mechanical experience is oil and filter changes.

I work in IT though, I can handle the computer end!

Thanks
Oliver
