Tranny oil pan torque spec

Looking for torque values for the 722.249 tranny oil pan. Anyone happen to know?

Dale

Thanks

Dale

This uses a rubber over the pan rail gasket correct?

If so, the amount of gasket compression is set by the odd shaped washers under the bolts. Screwdriver tight or just short of snapping off and gasket compression will be the same. (Unless the washers crush )

These are 6 mm threads correct? I'd go just tighter than a very hard to turn screwdriver. ( I'd have to look up a spec otherwise. )

IIRC the spec is 8 Nm. I do it by feel like 97 SL320 advises. Never had a leak or bent pan flange. Tighten each bolt a little at a time until all are a touch beyond snug. Even is more important.

Yes it does. I put a new MB gasket on it as a matter of fact. I'm not clear on what you mean about the "odd shaped washer..". I called the Indy so I use from time to time and he couldn't give me a torque value but said to snug them then as if I were using a 1/4" socket, tighten in an 'x' pattern as tight as I could. So, I was on my own and feel confident I got it just about 'right'.

I'd say I tightened them just darn near your recommendation

I never worked on a 722.4 and my last 722.3 was years ago. I think what 97 SL320 means is the sleeves/spacers the bolts go through that limit how much the gasket will compress before the bolts bottom.

@sixto - Yeah, the lip of the pan where the bolts go thru is 'raised' up off the transmission body. It would crush them if one went too tight..

the pan ears are not supposed to touch all the way on the transmission, the gasket is held snug by the little torque - a 1/2 inch nut driver is best for this job.

Thank you. That's what I was wanting.

I STILL have a small leak after replacing the gasket but haven't got under it to see if I can tell exactly where it's coming from while it's still nice and clean. Maybe later today or tomorrow.

Dale
