Bought a 1988 300CE
As Tyler would say, I bought the cheapest 300CE in the country. Got it for $800, because the owner (Australian young girl) thought she didn't had the pink slip and the registration is expired since November 2018. Fortunately for me; the pink slip, signed by the previous previous owner, was in the leather booklet in the car
![]() Straight body, 120K miles, it's pretty zippy, compared to my 300SE at least and the M103 runs silky smooth, no high idle and I love the styling. The car is lowered a little too much for my taste and the 16" Lorinser wheels rub when taking sharp turns, the fender is rolled (not the best job). I will have to bring it up again and find some fenders at the JY, I believe all W124 fenders are interchangeable. All windows go up and down. Did a thorough interior cleaning today and conditioned the dry leather seats. Things that need attention: Transmission bushings need replacement and the usual suspension work needs to be addressed. The zebrano wood is presentable but I would like to replace it with Burl eventually, doesn't seem to hard to find. And I'm getting better at refurbishing Mercedes interior wood. Sunroof is stuck, no movement but I can hear the motor. Not a big deal for me as I have repaired a couple in the past and they all still work smoothly. Are the lift harms the same for all W124 and are there any other models that have the same mechanism? I think it's different from the W126 genII mechanism. The sunshade for the rear window doesn't work, the motor runs, seems to not pick it up on the rail and the seatbelt percenters don't do much presenting anymore. I can hear a click on the drivers side and nothing is happening on the psg side. The trim pieces at the rear window need to be replaced, I'm sure, not easy to find. I don't think I've ever seen a 300CE at the JY. The biggest concern for me now is that the psg side seat won't slide back, it's stuck. All the other motors work fine, lift and tilt of the backrest work. With it being stuck in the frontward position I can't access the 2 front bolts to take out the seat (one of the previous owners purchased a working rail, left in the trunk, with some nice tools and a large maglite). Is there a way to manually slide the seat backwards, or what way is there to access the two front bolts in the most forward position? If I really like the car and want to keep it, I will take it south of the border to Tijuana, together with my buddies W140 600CL, for a paint job and maybe interior work. Interior is palomino if anyone has trim pieces or seats available. ![]()
