‘96 E320, continuing electrical questions
Hello all,
In other threads, I have asked questions about start, idle and running of this car. Turns out the throttle body had not been rebuilt so I had that done. The cold and or hot start was still off, so I replaced it with a good used one ( as far as I can tell). The trouble I am having now is that the car does seem to start and run better, but cruise control still does not work, and I have lost any function with the power windows, sunroof, turn signal, hazard lights and even interior light. Is all this bad in the new to me body control module (aka idle control ecm) or is this tied into something else? How can I begin to troubleshoot this? I very much appreciate Any guidance. First beer is on me.

If you have the "torpedo-style" fuses remove one at a time and check for corrosion on the ends. Use a small wire brush to clean the ends and the contact points in the fuse box, or replace all the fuses. That should alleviate your electrical problems with power windows, sunroof and lights, etc. The cruise control is another matter. ************** sells upgraded torpedo-fuses if you find corrosion on the ends of the existing fuses.

ATC fuses in this car; I had a W123 wagon, bought that kit and it fixed Many problems.

Yes very similar issues with my 94 E320 with an old wiring harness, but other wise top shape. If I hit a bump the cruise control would drop the setting. It then developed issues which a new overvoltage relay cured nicely. You've no doubt read the story on the wiring harness issue and checked to see you have the delphi upgraded engine wiring harness which if not, you will have endless electrical gremilins. Yes fuses as well..all points well taken. The fuses can cause the doors to not unlock and myriad issues where the car just plays dead on you out of the blue! Good luck!
Great cars, Ive got a nicely restored 95 wagon that needs a home, Only a couple states to your West.. |

working on this right now in my 99 e320.....it is the canbus module system. you can search the forum for that and i will try to find the link.
in the mean time you can disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and it should all be working again (until it starts going away again!)....kind of like restarting a computer... look in this link \/ \/ http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/search.php?searchid=8550694 Quote:

At least part of the problem wa the fact that the connection on the car side was broken, in such a way that the bottom portion would not connect properly. I figured that out, and connected it and everything but the windows work again.... Still can’t figure that out.

So, it appears a broken connector and/or dirty connections or modules were the culprit... I took apart the Convenience Control Module and didn't see any corrosion, but went ahead and put a little deoxit on each physical relay (electro-magnet) inside there. That cleared up all the 'new' electrical problems, as in windows, sunroof, etc... I cleaned all the the connections and connectors, even took apart both modules in the Main ECM; there was a Little corrosion on the board that traveled in from the perimeter of the pot metal casting itself.... All these things combined appear to have fixed my problem, except one...
I now have a non-working instrument cluster; temperature cluster flutters at all times that the key is on, but nothing else works. IF I understand how they work, if Any motor sticks, it fouls up all the rest of them. So, weird timing, but I assume I need to have my instrument cluster rebuilt... Module Master does that for $120, just did the one in my '99 VW Cabrio and they did great. I'll keep y'all informed.
