What is the insulation part name and number that goes inside the transmission tunnel
While putting back the transmission rear case housing on the transmission, I notice the insulation (same material as under the hood insulation) on the transmission tunnel body above the transmission is rather torn and need to be replace. I did some research on this issue. Somebody said it is a tunnel piece, part #1246100671. So I looked it up. No image . No, it is not a splash guard, either. Something tells me it is not right. In addition, supposedly made of plastic and that is not I need. Does anyone out there knows what I am writing about? Part name and part number is greatly appreciated

I'm pretty sure that in the last 25 years they have come up with much better sound dampening material you could use as a replacement.

Its pretty unlikely that the original piece of tunnel insulation will be available as a replacement part at this point. I would just seek out some generic vehicle sound insulation that would do the job.

Alternative to the tunnel piece?
pawoSD and Jorn, Thank you both for your excellent posts. I appreciated it. Upon further research on the issue of this tunnel piece, it turns out to be the correct part for the location area undercarriage above the transmission, hence the transmission tunnel, tunnel piece part number 124 610 06 71.
The original tunnel piece fits the follow models: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Base 3.2L L6 - Gas 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300 CE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 D 2.5 2.5L L5 - Diesel 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 D 2.5 2.5L L5 - Diesel 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300 D 2.5 2.5L L5 - Diesel 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300 D 2.5 2.5L L5 - Diesel 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 E 2.8, Base 2.8L L6 - Gas, 3.2L L6 - Gas 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 E 2.6, Base 2.6L L6 - Gas, 3.0L L6 - Gas 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300 E 2.6, Base 2.6L L6 - Gas, 3.0L L6 - Gas 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300 E 2.6, Base 2.6L L6 - Gas, 3.0L L6 - Gas 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300 TD Base 3.0L L6 - Diesel 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE Base 3.2L L6 - Gas 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300 TE Base 3.0L L6 - Gas 1995 Mercedes-Benz E 300 Base 3.0L L6 - Diesel 1995 Mercedes-Benz E 320 Base 3.2L L6 - Gas 1994 Mercedes-Benz E 320 Base 3.2L L6 - Gas I also found an alternative to the above tunnel piece: Design Engineering 050501 21" x 24" Floor & Tunnel Shield II - Adhesive Heat and Sound Insulation self adhesive. This Design Engineering part 050501 appears to be something I am interested in. Does anybody knows about this? If so, what the results turns out? Is it a good replacement for the original Mercedes tunnel piece? Comments, feedback/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all for reading this post. |

After looking at that part from Design Engineering, I'd say it would work fine for that use.

Going somewhat of topic but I’m amazed on how much quieter my w124 300CE is compared to my W126 300SE. With the W124 they really were on the right track, getting the cabin quiet.

W124 had more high strength structural steel so the chassis is stiffer, that goes a long way in making the car quieter. Also a simpler but better suspension design.
