w210 99 E320 Steering column collar lose fix

The turn signal indicator collar on the 99 is lose and sliding around. Annoying and probably long term will wear wiring inside the collar. There is a set screw inside the collar which is accessible normally only if you remove the steering wheel. Being somewhat lazy, I found these instructions elsewhere on the web and have copied them here when I needed to make this fix on a 99 e320. Very simple. And no need to remove the steering wheel. The attached photo shows the 5/16th hole in the column. Pic is also copied from the web.

Once you drill the 5/16 hole, you could plug it for aesthetic reasons, though it is not visible unless you're under the column. Another note, the set screw was lose only a fraction and I expect over time it will come lose again. I had this problem on my old 99 and ended up taking everything apart to tighten one little screw. This is a better solution.

1. Mark location to drill for access to screw that secures signal assembly. Make sure steering wheel is straight then mark a spot 1 3/4" down the column shaft cover from the base of the steering wheel and down 3 1/8" from the horizontal seam in the cover (this second measure is the 5 o'clock spot if you were looking at your steering wheel).

2. Drill a 5/16" hole being careful to stop as soon as the drill bit is through the cover plastic.

3. Align turn signal switch correctly by utilizing the horizontal embossed lines in the dust cover on top of steering colon in underneath the gauge cluster.

4. Tighten Phillips screw located approximately 1 1/8" directly above the access hole drilled in #2. I had no problem simply inserting my screwdriver into the hole and feeling around a bit to seat the screwdriver.

5. Install some sort of plug in the hole (optional for aesthetic purposes.

And Voila! No more rotating switch assembly. Easy 3 minute repair.
