The selector lever(s) alignment process you have outlined is correct. Before proceeding to adjustment of the rods, ensure that each of the three shift arms on the gearbox can be moved into three positions. You may have to rotate the driveshaft slightly to shift the levers thru their ranges. Each lever will have a gear-neutral-gear sequence as it is moved fore & aft.
