1989 300e question with belt replacement...
I just had my 300e head gasket replaced, and the head was sent to a machine shop to check for damge or cracks, the head came back fine..and the the motor is re-asembled, but my mechanic is having difficulty on remembering how the serpentine belt is put back... to make a long story short the belt was back on the car, but now my altenator isnt charging the battery, and the betl is looped on the altenator, my question is could the problem be, that teh serpentine belt isnt "snaked" through correctly causing the altenator to spin in reverse , hence not charging my battery... any suggestions, comments? thanks for your time....! : )

Check your owner's manual. There is a diagram of the belt placement in there.

Well...
it is obvious your mechanic is NOT a MB mechanic. I would check how loose the belt is. I bet the belt tensioner is not adjusted property or it is on its last leg.

Thanks for the replies.. ANd teh diagram looks very helpful, I ordered the MB-CDrom last week and got it in today! : ) Upon looking at it,,, I noticed that your belt diagram looked different than mines,,, not the actual pattern, but as if it was done by a different source. Is that diagram from a MB CDrom??

Jack's diagram looks like the one out of your owner's manual. If you have an AIR pump, then it is in place of the intermediate pulley (#6).
Did you check the diagram against your current belt setup? Good luck! ~Paul __________________ '91 300E, 214K miles |

The diagram is right out of my owner's manual.
Lukily, we don't have any air pump here in Canada. One less thing to worry about. Since most our air comes from the south/west, what's the use of pumping already polluted air into the engine.......lol JackD |
