Parking on a hill

Dumb question....

When you park on a slope and engage the park/emerg brake, what are you doing? Does it engage the rear brakes? Front? I had to have my front rotors replaced (after about 10K) because the mechanic told me if I engage the park/emerg brake with the brakes hot I would warp the rotors. That sounded goofy. I try and use the park brake a lot to relieve any strain on my transmission - car in neutral then park brake on.

Thanks

mark
