Question Instrument cluster lights

Hi everybody ! I own two MB s . A 1989 420 SEL and a 1979 450 SLC . My 420 has a instrument cluster light problem . The brightness adjuster works fine and all other lights on the dash work fine . All fuses are good . Im thinking its the bulb but how do you pull the instrument cluster out to replace the bulbs ? I have a tech diagram but it doesn t show any clips that hold it in or explain where or how to acess them from the outside of the dash . Help ...

mercedes has special tools to pull the cluster. if you do not have them, remove the panel under the steering column, reach up to the cluster & push out.

Hi,

The tool from MB is rather cheap ($10 to $15) compared to scratching your cluster or worse.

The job is a lot easier with the tool since the cluster probably has never been removed.

Tried it without the tool, now, I have it and it works great.

The place to pull from is the lower sides of the cluster. The tool are two t-handles with a metal rod -- bent at the end at right angles. The angled portion hooks behind the side of the cluster and allows you to pull the cluster out.

Good luck.
