Where does neutral safety switch connect on '88 300E?
Hi All,
Had my transmission replaced last week, now (after a few days of working perfectly) the starter won't turn over. Battery is good. Is there a neutral safety switch on a '88 300E? Do wires from the harness plug into the switch? If so, where? Thanks!! Gebhard |

It is under the car.
On the drivers side of the transmission. I had the same problem. To test it try starting the car in neutral. If it starts, it most likely the neutral switch. I learned that in this forum. Do a search...
Good luck!

May well be a faulty switch , but more likely
the linkage and switch often have to be re-adjusted when a tranny is changed. If you can get it started by moving the shift lever while attempting to start, it is a simple adustment on the switch. There is a slot on the fastening bolts that allows the switch to be rotated to the correct posistion[ adjustment] . You may just want to bring it back to the installers and asked that this be checked. If you are a DIYer, you will see the switch on the left side of trans, just above the pan at mid-point at the end of the shifter link. [ which is also adjustable] |

Thanks for the quick responses. The car won't start in Neutral either, so off it goes to the shop for a checkup. I tried releasing the parking brake and letting it 'click' into Park. No dice.
I'll follow up with the eventual solution. Thanks again! Gebhard |

You may want to look at the plug itself. It has a locking turn tab device that secures the wire harness .
Slight chance they did not turn the locker when plugging in the harness and it has unplugged. Remote, but possible.... Also , if they swapped out the tranny w/used one, likely you got the used sw instead of your original one. These switches are susceptical to water due to there location. so usually with a tranny swap , it is mileage time for a new one anyway.. When they go , you are STUCK.....so cheap insurance is new one while the trans is out.... |

Hey,
Good one , PZ !! As you can now see- The oval outside holes are where the fastening bolts go and the assem can be turned that ampunt for adjustment. Also, you can see the locking ring around the plug receptical . That turns to lock after the harness is plugged back in.. A pic sure beats all... need more of them... |
