Towing Capacity of 86 300E?
I'd like to tow a small to medium size tent trailer behind my '86 300E. Does anyone know what the maximum allowable trailer weight is, as well as the max. tongue weight? The ones I've been looking at have a GVWR of 1750 to 3070 lbs., an unloaded tongue weight of 170 lbs and a tongue rating of 350 lbs.
Does this sound like something my car could handle easily? I've read in a previous post that some models have a higher weight rating for the Euro model (7000 lbs) than for the US model (5500 lbs), possibly for liability concerns. Can I reasonably assume that the same would apply to my car? Also, does the stock wiring harness have any provision for plugging in a trailer light/brake harness and can M-B (or anyone else) supply an aux. trailer harness so that I don't have to use 3M splice connectors or the like? Is there anything in particular I should do to the car to ensure reliability while towing? Thanks Gary |

The listed max weight is 750kg (1650lbs) on a trailer without brakes. With working trailer brakes the listed weight is 1500kg (3300lbs). Haven't seen any trailer wring kits for MB in this country. Except for "M-class"
WE always solder the wiring connection at the plug for the tail lights & use an adaptor for imported cars that allows correct operation of turn signals & brake lamps. Remember the load on the auto transmission, you may need an external trans cooler. Don't think you want tongue weight above 250lbs.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought about the extra load on the trans., I usually drive cars with manual transmissions. Is there a source you know of for an external cooler? Any idea of cost? Where would be the best place to mount it? I'ts already pretty full up in the grille area. Where would I plumb it into the trans. for circulation? (does the ATF already circulate through the coolant radiator?) Thanks again, Gary |

Over in Norway where I come from the hitches has a recommended tongue weigth of 165 lbs at all times for passenger cars like these.
Some people upgrade to auto.transcoolers, but I haven't heard or seen anyone do a cooler on a manual there. And the majority of passenger cars there are manuals.
