I have an 84 300SD with 230K. The vehicle has had increasing differential noise over the past few years. The noise is a whining sound that increases with car speed (RPM), and quiets down when the car is shifted into neutral. The differential is the original, I tried changing the fluid once. Does the differential need replacement/repair? How much does this typically cost to fix?

The best thing I have done is to swap the diff out for a used one from the junk yard. Usually they don't give a problem. If you do this, wait for a few weeks and we may be able to send you one..We are going to be getting parts soon new, OE, and used!!!

Thanks for the response...
Would it be okay to continue to drive the car as it is, as long as there is sufficient fluid in the differential. In other words, is there any danger in driving a car with a whining differential? |
