OM 616 turbo swap
Hello folks, i am new here,i am from Belgium and i want to converse a 616 to turbo, i already bougt 4 617a turbo piston with rod,oil filter 617a,valves and oil squirls for the bottom cooling. Now i was chearching for an oil pump that delivers enough oil to feed the squirls. The oil pump from a turbo 617 is chain driven and i thingk it wont fit on a drive schaft driven om616.What do you thing about a normal pump from a normal 617,gives it more oil than the one from a 616?Has anyone try this?(put the oil squirls into om 616 bloc)
Greetings and thanks.Herwig. |

Hello to the forum,
There is a person on this forum which goes by the handle of "OM616" Not sure if he's still around or not. I think he tried or investigated machining the block for the oil squirters and it may be a bridge too far. I know Gurka motors made a OM616 turbo but good luck trying to deal with the Indian market and buying one. I wasted hours and got no where. I am sure it can be done unless the block itself (true MB OM616) does not allow for this. The Gurka flavor apparently does have a turbo flavor so maybe. |

You’d be fine just boosting the n/a pistons with the original oil pump. I’ve done 30,000 extremely abusive miles at 9psi on my moms 78 300d. I do have an egt gauge, but I haven’t done any fuel mods other than backed out the Ada. It’s hard to hit 600C, takes quite a long hill. I’ve been meaning to increase the rack travel, but I also need to do the same to my 350sdl. In reality, there is time for neither and I enjoy just driving them as is.
The w123 with turbo did pick up quite a bit of seat of the pants power, it would spin 205/75/14 tires and accelerated quite well compared to before, so I put a 3.07 gear in place of the 3.42 and now it has roughly the same pickup as before. I have an om602 in case the motor gives and a 4speed swap lined up for when/if the 722.1 lets go. In all likelihood, both will outlive me |
