E320 W211 - M112 - Definitive Oil Level?

Friends - On this recently-acquired, somewhat neglected car, just did the full oil drain, filter and oil change. Have put in - so far - 8+ quarts...

The instrument cluster 'quick' oil check indicates oil level 'OK'. The measured check indicates just over 7 quarts done at the prescribed 'warm after a few minutes' point.

So, looking for the definitive answer: With the manual indicating an 8.4 quart capacity with filter change, should I fill to a measured 8.4 quarts? What should the oil level sensor read, at full oil level? Any hard evidence warmly accepted (!)

Doing some searching around, it's remarkably hard to get a clear answer on this. I want to get a full fill at this point, for a couple of reasons: Apart from the standard dissipation of heat and scouring/filtration of any crud in system, I want to carefully monitor level for the oil burn and some leaks on this car.

I don't think oil changes were done on this car nearly as diligently as records might indicate!
