1985 380 sl engine miss

i have a 1985 380 sl that when the motor gets good an hot if i put my foot in to it just a little it starts to miss, from then on i have to press the gas pedal on it very lite . the fuel pump is makeing nose an i am going to replace it . my mechanic says if you let one set up for a long time moister will build up in the pump an rust particles will come from the pump,could that be the problem ?
