Hazard/Turn signal hyperflash

Hi everyone,
I recently took ownership of my grandfather's 1982 w123.
Recently, after having removed the instrument cluster for speedo lubrication, and center pedestal switches for cleaning, when I replaced them, the flasher and turn signals sounded like a machine gun.
So i've done due diligence and confirmed correct wattage bulbs, I've cleaned the ground points in both the front and rear fender and all bulbs and their respective sockets, and replaced the hazard switch. It's still exhibiting hyperflash. All bulbs light up strongly and it was working just fine before the removal of the old switch.
I'm assuming the only thing left over is the relay. That was removed and cleaned but no dice.
Any other suggestions I might not be thinking of before I go looking for a new flasher relay?

Many thanks all

Theo
