722.6xx shifter won't go down to d1 and back up
these shifters get stuck over time, and all you have is drive number 5.
a video shows problem. https://youtu.be/_EQPsCTcerI?si=ttgiT7I0FVdC3wg9 but not for a w140 to remove trimm to get to shifter. Mine has been stuck 6 years.

Good stuff, thanks for the link. My wife’s car’s 97 e300d shifter gets jammed up sometimes and doesn’t want to go back up into reverse and park. Probably doesn’t help that I shift it like a manual, holding it in third and 4th.
Hopefully it just needs lubed up like in the video

yes I read worse thing for 722.6xx is to manually shift.
