Question Please help me ID this diesel engine!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have acquired a motor from a tech school here that was donated by the factory as a training model. It is new and has training model stamped on it but has not been touched by the Tech school. The block numbers located on the drivers side in the middle are 616-011-28-01.It is a four cylinder diesel. A friend told me it was for the 240D but now he is not sure and I have it running on Ebay right now. Any help you may provide as to what application this is for would be greatly appreciated.Richard.

Mercedes did put the 616 in the 240d. They also put a 616 in other models such as the light commerical 207, 307d's etc. Someone with more knowledge than I have should be able to tell you if the numbers after 616 give some indication of what the application was.

The number is not an engine number. The sequence looks like a part number but is not in the US system. The part numbers for complete engines, short blocks, and crankcases all have the key number group 010 not 011. This makes me think the number is just a casting number.

The important features of 240Ds are where the oil filter is and what type of glow system. Otherwise they are pretty much interchangable. A/C mounting is also built onto the block after 1979.

Thank you for your replies! I am going to post more numbers in case something stands out that would help nail it down.

Head #'s 616 016 14 01 / 80 M C

Block #'s 616 011 28 01 / 25H 80

Injection #'s PES4M50C320RS103
11 047 10112
0400074988
615 070530IEPRO1

The block is blue and the head is black.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply,Richard.
