Question Exhaust fumes when a/c is on

Great forum! I hope some one here can point me in the right direction. My 380SE is a work in progress but I have a potentially dangerous problem. I smell really strong fumes in the cabin when I run the a/c. No problem in traffic and windows are down, no a/c. No problem when windows are up and no a/c. Only get the fumes when a/c is running. Also no fumes when car is idle, a/c on, and hood is up so I figure the fumes are coming from the engine compartment into the cabin and maybe not from under car.
Does anyone have an idea or has had a similar problem. I tried the search and found some with fumes & the heater being on not the a/c and they were also running diesel. Any suggestions could be a "life saver"

I would start looking for an exhaust leak. The air intake for HVAC is at the base of the windshield. If you are getting fumes in the car, you should be able to find the leak with the hood open. Listen and look carefully.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry it took a while for my thanks for your suggestion (computer was down). I will look there. I have noticed that the fumes are much worse while the car is idling, too. I guess it's time for me to put on my Sherlock Holmes cap and get to work on the mystery!
Thanks again!

Most likely an exhaust leak. In winter with the windows up and heat on and idling I have the same problem. But I have a cracked exhaust manifold as well, just too lazy and cheap to replace it. My AC is not working currently and I normally am a windows down sunroof open kind of guy so it does not bother me. I will have to fix it by winter though as it drives me nuts, actually can get it to stop by putting HVAC in recirc mode!!!!

Check to see that the hose on top of the rear of the left valve cover (while facing the car) has not come off or is loose.
