Alignment
It'll only come off when the key is in the 1(or 2 can't remember) position.
Basically at this point you must remove the entire assy. You can either take your title to MB dealer and get a new that;ll work with your key or go junk yard and used one. Then youll have 2 keys ......Again Dremel. read the old threads. That black ring is indistructable!!! |

If your lock set up is the same as mine (and make sure it is) then you'll want to see this:

Dremel with a black cutoff wheel will make quick work of the black HARD cover it will also throw very fine steel dust all over which will make tiny rust spots the next time it gets damp so cover everything! I had to pull the instrument panel to get to the bolts that hold the steering column up,had to take them out to drop the column enough to get room to get all the way around the black cover. After that it was easy. My car is a 91 300d but i suspect that the gas cars will be same in that area. Don

The black barrel comes out with the ignition lock cylinder when the U-shaped wire releases the ignition lock cylinder, at least in the 124 cars. There is no need to cut the black barrel. If you cut the barrel you will need to replace it too.

A trick I learned to get the black shell off when it's being sticky was to use a section of radiator hose slipped on over the whole assembly. It gives you something to actually get a grip on to spin it off, either by hand or with pliers.

True. But not when you cannot get the key to turn to the correct position. I had to cut through mine. Was a major PITA.
