Fog Lamp Replacement
I must be getting old and decrepit, because I can't seem to do a successful search for information about replacing the foglamps on a 1988 300TE without running through lots of threads about Euro lamp upgrades. I can't afford the Euro upgrade right now and I'm not comfortable with doing electrical mods right now anyway, so all I need to know is whether there are any tricks or pitfalls involved in lens and reflector replacement for the foglamps. One of my f-lamps was made inoperable for me by a recent Friday-night party goer in my neighborhood.
Anybody remember any good threads on the subject? Thanks very much.

Hi David:
The headlight surround (rim) is about $80 at Fastlane, and the reflector is about $40. (about 40% of the cost of Euros. ) I am assuming the headlight lens is OK - just the fog light needs repair. I don't know if the yellow filter cup is included with the replacement reflector or not. The rim/surround (fog light lens) is held in place with plastic clips on the top and bottom. They may be brittle, and if they break you need a new light assembly, or a lot of skill and luck with epoxy and superglue! The clips look like this: \_\__'===='__/_/ The \_\_____/_/ section must be pried up in the middle so that the '====' section attached to the rim/suround/fog lamp lens can be slid out. The reflector is a snap in item on my US DOT lamps - hope the snap in mounting didn't get crunched or an entire new assembly may be needed. You will probably have to remove the headlight wiper and panel below the light to get to the bottom clips, which means removing the turn indicator unit. Also, anticipate that the unbroken rim/lens may be a bit faded and not quite match the new one! All this sounds more complex than it is, actually. If you want a plea bargain, ke6dj is selling his used MB OEM Euro lights in the for sale section - you might make him an offer? Or if you are intent on US/DOT, I will sell you the pair of my US lamps for your car. (Sucker bet - If you are going to all this work, consider the Euros!!!) If you are down for a weekend, we can play with the lighting! Good luck. (BTW, did you make it up to Esterlina vinyards yet - www.Esterlinavineyards.com ?)

Thanks, John.
We didn't make it to Esterlina the last time we went to Sea Ranch. Hell, we barely made it to Gualala for groceries. Both of us, upon arrival, became amusingly lethargic. We managed to take my Golden to the beach a number of times. I tried for, but missed, what could have been a wonderful photograph of her surfing between a couple of sea lions who came over to check out the funny animal in the water (same shaped heads poking up out of the water - pretty funny). Overall, she was pretty disgusted with me, since I couldn't get my rear off the deck long enough, in her caninic opinion, for sufficient retrieval-dummy-into-ocean tossing. I've been glued to my office chair much of the rest of the summer, and when not there, out on the golf course. If anyone noticed, the State did a $7.5 billion short-term financing at the end of June to cover the continuing revenue deficit. That was one of my little projects. I'm treating myself with a week of golf in and around St. Andrews in a few weeks.
