I think the most important thing about finding somebody to do a valve job is to shop around and compare what each shop does for the money. Some shops do the valve job, but do not reseal the intake manifold. Others do only what it needs, instead of replacing vacuum hoses, cam gears & so forth while it is all apart. A valve job with everything included should run about $3000.00.

I have struggled with three different MB independents that struggled mightily with regular diagnostic work on my car. All three employed the "throw parts at it until it's fixed" method of repair.

I took Alon's advice and went to Mr. MB Motors in Encino and have finally found the right mechanic for my car.

What's more - he's incredibley reasonable. His hourly labor rate is $60 / hour. Heck, Pep Boys charges $60 / hour.

It's 51 miles from Diamond Bar to his shop according to mapquest, but it is worth the drive.

Bobby, you really should go see Enrique in Encino - you won't regret it.

Thanks for the reply to this post. It is a strange thing that brought my question about. My SL started smoking some on take off but not everytime. It did it for a couple of weeks and then has stopped. I have been monitoring the oil use and it is about 1/2 qt every 750 miles. Have not had any compression test or anything else done only talked with the mechanic I usually use and he does not want to just put in valve guide seals if that is all the problem. But anyway it will be a while unless things get worse soon. Will save post for the mechanic, Thanks.

Had a great day yesterday, enjoyed meeting all and your wife is a super person and your car is not bad ether. Greet both for me and PeeWee as well.
