wiring harness insulation
My 1994 E420 (80,000 miles) is in need of a new wiring harness. After reading many post it seems that this is a major problem. Some people have been lucky and have had the dealer replace the harness under the "good-will" program. My dealer has no "good-will" left and MB Client Assistance laughted at me. Well, I am getting ready to battle MB over this problem and could use some help. If anyone has information that might help me I would be grateful. Any service bulletins, MB documents refering to the problem, etc., would be great. Thanks in advance!

you would have to spend major $$$ to sue them, cuz that's your only recourse. there is enough information on this forum to back any claim. someone really ought to start a class action suit against MB...

Nothing in writing! MB never published any info on this problem, even to their dealers.

I would suggest a different dealer. I know of a harness done within the last month on a 1993 300E (104) for labor only and the charge was a couple hours - reasonable!

i agree with steve, try another dealer. it is my understanding that it is at their discretion with a limitation of up to 100,00 miles. being a service manager at a european new car retailer, we have guidelines and a budget we must work within. these decisions are usually based on service history, age, and mileage. even though the engine wiring harness is a known problem, the vehicle is out of warranty and any help is a gift. having said this, i just had mine done on my 1993 300e with 68,000 miles. they goodwilled the part and i paid labor.

it is at their discretion and from what i've heard there is a monthly budget set aside to perform such repairs. just remember that all of this is out of MBUSA's hands. i tried my best but it didn't work...

Also before replacing the wiring harness I suggest that you request the service history records of your MB E420 from the $tealers. In doing so you will be able to know for sure if the harness has or has not being replace already. In addition, if you have alway keep your vehicle service with MB then I agree try and $tealer$hip.
