Power steering question?

I have a 1992 190E and the power steering is stiffer than the american cars I have driven. Since I am new to Mercedes is this normal? The power steering is working and the car handles well and corners nicely. Does Mercedes do this to give you more feel to the road or is this a malfunction.

I have seen mention on this forum concerning changing the power steering fluid and filter. At what intervals should this be done. The car has 90,000 miles and I have been the owner for three months and do not know when or if the fluid was replaced.

Thanks for your help,
Cliff
