Rotor and Pad replacement - 94 E420
Folks,
I've been away for quite some time... hope everyone's doing well. I want to replace the pads AND rotors on my 94 E420. I have the pads (pagid) and a set of rotors which I ordered some time ago from the partsshop. I also have 8 brake sensors, 2 packets of squeal paste, and 2 front wheel seals. Am I missing anything? Changing the pads seem easy enough.. as it's described here: http://www.peachparts.com/e_class_brakejob.htm It's the rotors I'm concerned about... done rotors on other cars before, but not this one. Any tips? Are there bearings that need to be greased? How tight does the bolt holding the rotor need to be? Thanks Willy

By all means do the bearings while you are in there. Do a search - should be plenty of info in here somewhere.

IMHO way too early for front bearings...I'd definitely wait, they aren't a problem area.
As to the bolts holding the rotors, not particularly tight, maybe 30-35 ft/lbs...not real critical, they just need to be snug.

I did not mean replace the bearings but you will want to "service" and inspect them while they are out. Clean an repack them prior to assembly. Also, if memory serves me - the torque for the rotor to the hug is higher than 30-35 ft-lbs. Sorry, don't remember the exact number and I don't have the manual anymore.

There is only one small bolt which holds the rotor to the hub to keep rotor in place when removing caliper,this bolt is 6mm diameter and only needs to be snug.The two bolts holding the caliper on need to be cleaned and apply blue loctite and torque to 80 ft lbs. Its also a good idea to clean the rotor mounting area on the hub to remove any rust to insure a flat suface for rotor to mate to. Cleaning and repacking bearings would be advised at this mileage also.The bearings need to be readjusted to 0.01 to 0.02 mm end play.The best and most accurate way to adjust bearings is with a dial indiator setup.

For packing the bearings... is any special grease needed?
How does a DIY readjust the bearings to 0.01 to 0.02 mm end play? Note... just modified my SIG, as I now have 78K miles.
