W210 Motor Mount Replacement

Hello, I never really got a good response when trying to get info about replacing the motor mounts on a 1998 E430...
Well I finally replaced them they cost $80.00 a piece the part number was 202 240 29 17.. I drove the car up on some ramps then took the splash pan off
I could not visible tell that the mount was bad while installed except for the vibration and that some of the silicon had oozed out up onto the engine mount, obviously it turns brown after it burns.. The left mount was bad, I did read somewhere that the left ones go bad.. I would guess that when you floor it the left one is being pulled away from the frame with the torque from the engine... I had checked this by opening up the hood and turned he wheel as far left as possible, I gave it some gas and I could actually see the engine jump up...,
Anyway I took a floor jack and a piece of plywood to protect the oil pan , then I used a 13mm (I think) socket to loosen and remove the lower bolt, and a open end wrench for the top bolt after the were removed I started jacking real slow and I could see the engine rise up away from the mount , I pulled out the old mount,, It was beat. I positioned the mount, it will only go in way. I loosely installed the lower bolt then lowered the engine, everything was in place I applied some blue thread lock to the top one since I could tell some was there when I removed it. I am not sure about the torque on the lower one, I just torqued it enough where I thought it would not break... Don't pay the dealership the $500 bucks to do it, If you have tools and know how to change your own oil then you can definitely do this job..

This job should take about 30min excluding jacking up or using ramps for the car..

Thanks for sharing your engine mount replacement experience Peter. I try to make it a point to finish up a post that I started from my experience in resolving the issue.

It is always a refreshing to view posts that explain resolution to a problem instead of just the problems.

When you raised the engine did the radiator fan touched the fan shroud? If so how did you magane to clear the fan? - did you bend it?

Hello, Pat201, There is was enough room on top of the fan blade for it not to touch.. You only have to jack it up about 1.5 inches... Is yours Busted ?

When I replaced mine I noticed that I had to bend the fan about 1/4 inches.

What were your symptoms of a bad motor mount?

I am chasing down a "hard" idle condition in my '98 w210 @ 60k miles and have been told it may be the motor mounts.

What were your symptoms?

Thanks in advance.

W210 Motor Mounts

It felt and sounded rough like it needed a tune up, you could do two quick checks and open the hood and get in the drivers seat and look between the hood and the dash board and lock the wheel to the left and give quick gas pedal, you may see the engine rise up on the left, most likely the left mount is busted,, that's the one that is being pulled on a quick take off... Another check is to look at the surrounding area where the mount is to see if there is brown stuff like burnt sugar on or near the mount where it attaches to the engine, the brown stuff would be the burnt silicon that oozed out.....

Sure 'nuff

Your suggestions for checking the motor mounts were excellent!

My car failed both tests. Lots of burn, brown crud at the old motor mount location. I will change both.

Thanks for the help.

Did the engine pop up when you stepped on the gas...?

I just replaced mine this afternoon. 2 hours was more like it. Both sides were equally hard to remove. For the driver side, you need to remove the AC unit to be able to remove the mount (based on another forum member's experience). You can loosen it from the top using a 16mm socket (5/8 in my case), a u-joint adapter to allow angled ratcheting, and a long socket extension. The other side required the same amount of time. For this side, it was necessary to move the alternator out of the way. I think it was a total of 4 hours... and that's with air tools.

Anyway, the car was unbelievably smooth at idle afterwards. It also lost that initial "thunk" sound when you start the engine. Very satisfying procedure. Of course, parts were ordered through the forum sponsor.

Did my C230 this week, and thanks to no belt driven fan (electric on-rad only) and other easy access four-banger niceness, it was simple and took under an hour to do both sides. The passenger-side was done-for and the other one looked fine, but I'd never so just one. Trans mount looked perfect, so left it.

Replaced my driver's side mirror galss to fix malfunctioning heating thermostat. Was a little shocked at the $120 price until the parts guy showed me the $290 ML glass.

John

Any tips for me when I do my 1998 C230?

Any components need to be loosened like alternator or AC compressor?

Did you raise engine from the bottom of sump (or hoist from the top) how many inches would you guess you raised engine ?

Any bolts difficult to remove?
