Dial indicator set-up question.

I have always used the Haynes method to set wheel play on bearing repacks, but have taken the plunge and bought a dial indicator from the Snap-on man. Would appreciate any wise counsel for best place to connect for measuring (unit has clamp) and any other pro-tips for measuring end-play. Haven't checked my books yet, but if any body knows spec for 400E and 240D, it would be much appreciated.

Did a search and only found a couple of posts on the subject with no specifics as to set up. I have seen this done once, but don't remember the specifics and didn't want to begin process and possibly hit a snag on set-up in the middle the job.

All help appreciated.

Just did my W116 with a dial indicator. There are two adjustments:

Bearing End Play

Rotate the hub several times before measuring.
Place the magnetic base of the stand on the wheel hub and the dial indicator touching the center "0" ring of the hub grease cap.
Check the end play of the wheel hub by pulling and pushing of the flange.
Don't rotate the wheel while measuring.
My spec's are for this: 0.01-0.02mm

Lateral Runout

Place the base of the dial indiator on the floor with the dial indicator about 1" from the outer edge of the rotor.
Rotate wheel and record runout.
My spec's are: max 0.12mm

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Sounds straightforward.
