'86 300E Sunroof Problem - Help!

I went to open the sunroof to the vent position today and heard a funny"clunk" noise. When I looked up at it, the rear of the roof was raised up ok, but there was an odd-shaped black bar protruding forward from the right side at an angle about 2-3 in. On closer examination, it appears to be the bar that the cable is attached to that actually pushes/pulls the sunroof into position. It looks like one or two of the small bolts that attach it to the rear of the sunroof came out from the RH side somehow. It doesn't appear that anything is broken, but I'm not sure how to get at it. It looks like the inner rear fabric piece has to come off. Has anyone had this happen before? Are the bolts likely lost into the bowels of the car? Can they possibly jam something if I don't retrieve them? Do I need to remove the whole sunroof to get at this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

Try to get the roof to slide back 3-4 inches, the whole sunroof.
You can then pull down on the front part of the sunrrof headliner panel, it clips to the front of the sunroof panel, then the headliner panel can be slid back so you can put new screws in. You can have a look-see for the old screws, don't think you'll see them.
You may have to manually help the sunroof slide back those first 3-4 inches. The bar that goes acroos that the cable hooks to is called the bridge. It may be broken, you'll be the first to know.

The screws fell out of my Sunroof mechanism. I removed the interior panel from the sunroof and put in new screws with Loctite. Problem solved.

Does anyone know the part number for the plastic clips that holds the inner fabric in place? I replaced my crushed bracket a while ago and the clips where in bad condition.

I guess the previous owner had also opened it up. They looked worn

Thanks,

The roof on the '95 when closed is not quite flush in the rear. It sits slightly low.

Is there an adjustment to raise it slightly?

190dee So the procedure is:

-First as Gilly described move the roof back 3-4",
-pop the sunroof liner off from inside
-slide it back to expose the two small nuts on each side which adjust the rear height?

Am I on the right track here (sorry, no pun intended!)

Yes, this one is a easy adjustment. If nothing is broken it's just to remove the inner fabric and adjust it. The sunroof is held by two small nuts on each side. You can't really miss them. Let me know if you need more specific info...

Don't know for sure if your sunroof is exactly the same but I guess so.

Haasman: You're right. It can be a bit tricky to slide the headliner out the way but if you do it carefully nothing will break. After that return sunroof to closed position and do the adjustment.
