94' E-320 oil filter location???

Where's that dang oil filter in this here machine??
Bought oil & filter over trhe weekend and before I pull the plastic shield would like to know where the filter housing can is. I've seen them oil change professionals underthere changing it in the past (at least that what I hope they we doing) but never witnessed the location. Second question: What's the total oil capacity including the filter?

Stand on the drivers side of the car. Lean over and look down between the back of the engine and the brake booster. You should see a round, black cap. You'll need an oil filter wrench to remove this cap. It is reasonably priced at the dealer. Remove the cap and replace the filter element. Not sure what the official capacity is - I think it was changed. If you put in 7 quarts it will be between the lines on the dipstick.

Q1: Are you saying that I don't need to get under the car to access the oil filter casister or that it's accessable from above and below?

Q2: I'm assuming its an oil filter canister because all I got when I asked for an oil filter for this car was the element itself. (2"ish dia X 4" ish long pleted paper element). What type of oil wrench are we talking about here? My past experience (heavy machinery) with oil canisters is a can with a nut on top or a bolt that goes all the way through to hold the canister in place.

I don't recall seeing the mechanic leaning over the fender to pull the filter but then again it was a couple of years ago when I used one of those Jiffy Lube type places where you can see the service person. The last 2 services were done at the MB dealership out of sight and I don't have a service book.

yup, access is from the top. some on this forum have said that they can unscrew the canister by hand. i don't have that kind of grip, besides, on top of the canister, mine says to tighten to 28 NM.

the wrench looks like this - costs about $15 (steep but it'll last a lifetime). you may find an aftermarket one that fits but i didn't.

and BTW do a search on "topsider" & "oil change". even the manual indicates that oil is changed that way (via suction through dipstick).

My 1994 E320 filter housing has a 74mm diameter and 15 flats. I had a hard time finding the wrench. So from the advise of this forum, I measured the diameter and went the auto parts store.

I bought a Ritefit size "B" at Murray's Autoparts for $3. It looks similar to the wrench above, but is stamped steel. It works great.

I have found that with my 95 E320, 7 quarts brings the oil level to the perfect level just to the bottom of the upper red mark.

Tom is correct . There is a TSB from Benz on the matter.
The new capacity is now 7 l, down from 7.5 l.
[7.9 qts to 7.4 qts] w/filter.
They recommend Editing all owner manuals as such.

There is also a follow-up TSB that calls for dip stick measurement modification to be Between the marks measure HOT [ normal operating temp]

I have noticed the ceasing of a front seal leak after adjusting to the modified instuctions/capacity, but don't know for sure if they are related , nor have I been able to find out the reasoning for these TSBs.
Anybody know?

Look under the DIY tab at the top of this page and click the link to oil change 2. The wrench part number is there, your filter may not have the long rod shown.

Just want to say thanks for all the help I received on this subject. I found the oil filter canister and it looks like I'll need a wrench after all. It's snug... You guys saved me a lot of time looking for that filter. With out a doubt I would have had the oil drainned and then spent the next 4 hours looking under the car for the filter...............I love this board. Thank You again!

Arthur, how is this modification different from how the dipstick was originally read? Could you clarify?

They no longer want the the max line when hot to be used . The middle [ between the high/low marks] when at operating temp is now considered ideal.

Also calls for a couple of min. wait before checking to allow all oil to return to pan to get an accurate reading [ which one always should do anyway..]
I think they were just getting too much oil and the pressure on these 104s is pretty high to begin with... maybe that's why they leak alot..
As I said , my seal does not leak since I corrected level as suggested..
I can email you the TSBs , if you email me off line,,, but that is just about what they say..

my rear seal used to leak a bit, verified with a fluorescent dye.
now that i don't fill to the top mark i haven't seen a single drop of oil on my garage floor.

I watch level real close now ..

I ended up at a Pep-Boys today but forgot the Fit Rite size you mentioned. I came home with several sizes I "thought" would work but all ended up not a size B. I was up in the mid range area.

I'll be back again tomorrow for the "B" size, I hope they have it............They should have a size selection book there to make a selection......Pep's seems to be pricey here on the east coast at $4.99.

i got one from pepboys but it wasn't an exact fit. i tried everything they had. i finally caved in and got the MB one...
