190e starter motor inop

The starter on my wife's 1986 190e<8valve> won't engage/turn. I have replaced the safety switch on the trans, and the shift bushings. The key turns with no problem, and returns from the start position like normal. when in the start/run postion everything works except the starter motor. I starter works if voltage is applied directly to it. All fuses are in good shape, as are the battery cables, grounds, cables, and battery.
I am hoping it is the electrical portion of the ignition switch, if so, how is this replaced?
Thanks for the great info.

From what I read when I was contemplating changing the electrical part of the ignition switch when I changed the tumbler, you have to remove the instrument cluster and you might have to remove the ignition tumbler too. That I'm not sure of that part but according to the factory manual you do.

190e continued

I've removed the instrument cluster and cannot seem to get the plug free from the back of the ingition assembly - is there some "trick" to this? There is not much room to work with, so any good advice would really be appreciated. I am hoping that this is the solution.

I know the ignition tumbler has some sort of "lock" on the electrical part of the switch to keep theives from just unplugging the electricals. You might have to hae the key in a certain position or remove the tumbler all together. I'll check my manuals tonight.

This job is no fun....You need room to see and work if you want to change the ignition switch. I did this last year because ignition tumber froze up. Replaced both switch and lock cylinder.

I took the instrument cluster completely off after
taking off the bolster (pad by your knees, airbag and steering wheel.) Be sure to change all your bulbs when you have the instrument cluster out. It's easier to do this now than later. They don't cost that much and its not worth the hassle if a bulb burns out later. It is was hard to get
the plug off the switch. Be careful that you do not damage it on removal. A lighted mirror was
handy to use under the dash to see what I was getting into.

Hope this helps,
Gary
