'86 560 valve stem seals

I ran a search and found some info but not all I need. Can anyone give me step by step directions on how to replace the valve stem seals on 1986 560 engine? Any help will be appreciated.

Here is the abreviated version.

1. Acquire special spring compressor tool.
2. Remove the following; spark plugs & wires, valve covers, cam followers.
3. Mark the cam followers so you can replace them in the same location they came from.
4. Rotate engine to TDC on cylinder you are working on.
5. Remove valve springs.
6. Replace seal.
7. Install valve springs.
8. Install cam followers for this cylinder only.
9. Repeat steps 4-8 on all remaining cylinders.
10. Install spark plugs & wires.
11. Install valve covers.

Your done in about 3 hours.

valve seals

Dave,

Thanks for your reply. One question, when you say cam followers are you meaning rocker arms? And does the camshaft stay in position or remove? Opps that is two questions. This is all because I am a new learning mechanic that does not mind trying things as long as I have good info.

Rocker arms is another term for them but mercedes referes to them as cam followers. The camshaft does not have to be touched at all. If you are thinking of doing it yourself and need the tool, let me know, I have been known to rent mine out.

Valve seal guides

Dave,

Thanks for the info and the offer to use the tool. Let me see what I can find here. I have an elderly friend that has closed his auto shop but has all his tools and tells me he has three different kind of spring compressors so maybe one will work. Or does it take something that only Mercedes has? Will let you know how it all comes out in a couple of weeks.

Thanks again.

I kept this post Valve stem seal RR for when I will be replacing the seals. I thought that it was very informative. Hope that it helps.

Dave,

Have everything ready to do valve seals on 560 engine and borrowed three valve spring compressor tools from a friend and none of then will do the job. Can you tell me the name and or number of the tool you have and I will try to find one and if not are you serious about renting yours? give details please.

Dave,

If you are serious about the tool rental, can I get in line? Valve stem seals are on the project list for early next month along with t-chain and guides.

Thanks

My tool is for rent. Here is the deal. $30 rental for as long as you need it. $200 deposit, refunded when I get the tool back. Shipping is on you. Same deal as I made for one of our other members a few months back.

Send a check for $230 + shipping and it on its way to you.

I can let you know what the shipping charges are once I know where I am sending it.

There is no substitute for having the right tool to do the job.
