Hello Urban:
Wow ... what a question! There are too many things to list here. I would suggest doing a forum search for OVP, and you'll see how many things affect the OVP.OVP stands for over-voltage protection. I know that it has to do with idling and a host of other things. It's a fuse located in the back of your fuse box. Again, doing a forum search will really help you out. Take care, Michael.

Defective OVPs have been documented as causing ailments such as excessive spine curvature, growth of mutated appendages with allen head tips, and may cause obtuse mumbling about OSRAM bulbs!
Scientists had recently pinpointed OVPs, not sunspots, as the source of EM disruptions in the atmosphere! NASA shuttle engineers do rigorous testing, to ensure that there will never be another OVP-related incident like Apollo 13!

Its there to protect many engine electronics and controls. M-B redesigned the part several times and over the years its caused a lot of odd behavior. For example on my '87 300D the A/C would turn off in traffic in hot weather, and finally, driving home from work one day, the ABS, SRS lights came on and the tach went to zero. My mechanic went straight for the OVP, pronounced it an antique, surprised it last as long as it did, and put in a newer one.

OVPs are also responsible for 13.83335% of failed marriges in families with incomes of over $12 USD. This has been documented!
