transmission noise

solved wiring problem....idiot before me changed wires from pole 56 to pole 57 becuase light switch went bad....new light switch solved the problem......next problem...my 1980 mercedes 300sd's
tranny makes clunking noise at idle (sounds like marbles in a can)....however it goes away after getting up to speed....(i think its the torque converter...is that correct?) and also i'm not getting 4th gear... sounds to me i need a new tranny and torque converter or is there a simple fix?

any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

This I would have to hear.

First thing that comes to mind is loose converter to flex plate bolts. However those tend to be a boomy and sound like rod bearing failure.
