FWIW, I have kept the wipers on our 300E and C220 working fine with a little white lithium grease on the shaft every time the oil is changed.
Stop the wiper in mid-windshield position by turning the ignition off so the shaft is extended. Wipe the shaft off and apply a light coat of grease. The cars only have a combined total of 270K on them, so I guess it's a little early to tell if this works or not

Once I found that there were two recesses at 5 and 7 o'clock on the unit it took 30 seconds to remove the cover and 2-3 minutes to clean and regrease the unit. The recesses are next to the plastic cover to enable the cover to be prised off (not the two holes that are just in from the recesses these do nothing to help removing the cover).
All is now working except that my wiper rests one third over the windscreen, I think that the motor is out of sync? Any ideas. |

Hmm.
What kind of car? Is the "swipe" of the wiper normal?

Swipe is normal
Chuck,
the model is a 1996 C180, and as I said it was easy even for a layman like myself who only just knows where the petrol goes. Yes the swipe is normal just the resting position is out. When I try to hold the wiper a while it makes no difference the wiper still returns to the same position. |
