1995 e320 Engine clatter
Hello again,
I am new to this car and am noticing an engine clatter in lower revs. It gets slightly better when the engine is warm, but in still noticible. It's more noticible from the inside of the car than the outside. Any guesses? I'm thinking something to do with the valves... Maybe a fuel injector cleaner might work? Thanks |

I have a 95 E320 with 157k miles on it that will make a series of noises before it is warmed up. Upon initial start you can hear the oil pump wine for a couple of minutes (common to the 104 engines), also it will have a slight diesel sound if I drive it right after starting it up cold.
As far as the clatter sound goes, it will do that too on occasion, I found out it is a lifter leaking down overnight. That sound would last for quite a while after initial startup and eventually go away after it was fully warm. I switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 several weeks ago and it seems to have taken care of my lifter noise upon startup. Do you think it sounds like a lifter? Very possible depending upon what weight of oil your using and the total miles. Dale |

Yeah... I've been thinking that it might have something to do with the lifter as well. The car has about 100,000km. That's about 60k miles. I am not sure what oil is in there (dealer changed it before selling it to me).
Thanks. |

60k miles!! That thing isn't even broken in yet!! I've got almost 100k more miles on mine. It has been and continues to be the best car I've ever owned. Enjoy it!!
