Trouble starting

Have an "85 380 SL that is having trouble starting. Mechanic believes problem is transistor ignition unit and/or fuel pump relay. He says one of these could cause other to go bad and vice versa. Battery has plenty of power and turns over fine, just won't catch. Had fuel pressure accumulator replaced 2 years ago.
