W140 brakes for W124

Would anyone know if W140 S320 brakes would fit my W124 300CE? I can pick up the 2 front calipers from a nearby junkyard for $50.....

I'm quite shure the 4-piston-calipers won't fit on your car.

I tried to install the brake from 300E-24V/E320/400E to my 300TE but need the different triangle-wishbones from these models to have enough clearance between rotor an wishbone/lower supporting mount(?)



I've ordered the 24V-wishbones now, they are expencive, 326.44 Euro (ca. 300USD) each at the dealer and 170 Euro OEM (febi Bilstein).

Partnumber are
left side: MB: 124 330 34 07 / febi: 15694
right side: MB: 124 330 35 07 / febi: 15695

And BTW the rotor is different as well :-/

sorry, I forgot:
the rims are different from yours if you have stock 6 1/2 x 15"!
You need 16" rims from the W140 for the clearance between caliper an inner rim and because of the larger rotor.

The 24V-brake fits under 15" rims - but special ones again.
Don't ask me how I know that...

Hi guys,

I did a LOT of research on this since I am planning on upgrading my brakes too. First, I would not bother with ANY W140 brakes, it is highly unlikely anything wil swap. If you are willing to spend the $50 and experiment, please let us know what you find. You didn't specify what year your CE is. The very late versions had 294x25mm brakes with 4-piston calipers (early ones had 4-piston calipers with smaller 295x22mm rotors). The real early ones, through 1989, had 284x22mm with a single floating caliper.

Now as to what will swap! From what I could tell, the later (biggest) brakes SHOULD bolt on. The only difference is the lower control arm, as Chris said, BUT I have heard of people having the swap work with the original control arms (no need to swap to the later style). I haven't personally tried it on my car yet since I haven't bought the new big rotors yet. I did score a set of E420 brake calipers, front and rear, which will bolt on. The 500E brakes are even bigger but may require the 129 hub and/or knuckle used on the 500E (there are conflicting reports about this, nobody seems to know for sure). The problem with the 500E brakes is the weight. They add SIGNIFICANT unsprung weight to the front end and that reduces handling feel. Plus the cost is very high, used 500E brakes are scarce.

As to wheels, you may need to get late model 8-hole wheels from a 93-95 model W124, as Chris said... depends on your stock ones though. I use 16-inch wheels (any will fit from from a W202/203/208/210) so that's not a problem for me.

I don't know for shure, but some months ago a buddy bought some W140 front calipers, light alloy, black colour, for his W201 3.2 AMG (that allready has the upgraded - or different - lower control arms). They looked the same than the early 500E calipers...

The stock brake for a 1989 300 D/E/CE/TE is single caliper floating type and vented rotors 284mm x 22mm.

I tried it but to now avail because of the old style control arms with the pressed supporting mount (is thas the correct term?). The picture I posted yesterday shows the old control arm with the (used) rotor for the larger brake in close contact :-(

The parts list from EPC should help, but I didn't do research on this.

Early 500E brakes have light alloy calipers, later on Mercedes changed to the R129 calipers, made of cast iron, for the 500E due to thermal problems with the light ones. Since the 400E calipers are cast iron as well, the weight difference should be small.

Costs of new parts are HIGH. Used ones in good condition should do it.
