Diesel noise from gas engine

Hello.

When my 1995 e320 is cold, it makes a diesel noise from the engine. This continues for ~5 minutes and it quiets down. What could this be? Can one of those additives help calm this noise?

THanks

I had the same symptom in my '97 C230. Replaced to belt tensioner shock and that took care of things.

Good luck

Could be your AIR pump going bad. This part is emissions-related and only runs for the first minute or two when you first start your car cold. The pump bearings might be going bad, or you may want to check the rubber elbow hoses that lead from pump to the head for holes.

A good test is to simply disconnect before you start car in the morning and see if noise disappears. The AIR pump is located just above the alternator.

G'luck

Thanks for the suggestions,

I don't think it is the air pump since I can hear the pump working properly. It does shut down after a minute or so. The noise I am referring to is more like a lifter noise and persists much longer than few minutes.

Thanks

One more thing. Car makes this noise only under load. In Neutral, no noise at all....

Oh yeah about the real MB.. I don't mind the noise, but I just don't want something to break because I just left it.

Cool

You might want to have the exhaust manifold gasket checked and/or tightened.

similar experience w/ 94' E-320

I posted some time ago under "Mild valve tap noise" You can do a search under hinrg02 and you can review other comments at the time.
I ended up changing the oil to a 5W-40 and it stopped.

Thank you for your suggestion. I am now thinking about the belt tensioner as the noise only occurs when accelerating. Nothing during idle or if in neutral.

The search continues...
