Thanks for your response. The smog guy's book is actually the state manual used by all mechanics in CA doing smog. However, you made an interesting point. That the 1985 V8s were adjustable as far as timing. My 420 SEL was manufactured on 10/85. The factory decal in the engine compartment also does indicate the 12 degrees and refers you to the manual for adjustment. Could it be that my 420 SEL was one of the few built with adjustable timing in 1985?

Also, you mentioned that the static distributor timing may need to be re-adjusted. How do you do this?
