Mercedes Part Numbers

Does anyone know the subtle differences in Mercedes part numbers for identical looking parts? I need to replace the A/C Pushbutton for my car (1996 S420)...Part number is 140 830 24 85. I found one out of a 97 E320 that looks identical, but the part number is 140 830 26 85. I asked the dealership, but naturally they have no clue. Any ideas? Do you think it's safe to plug in and try?
