I found an engine today,in a hulk in a yard;it wont cost much, maybe a hundred fifty. Someone took one of the injectors and the open hole has rust around it so obviously it happened a while ago.
But at least it could be rebuilt; I've done a Volvo diesel before. It needs I'm guessing; head rebuilt , rings, bearings, oil pump, gaskets. Where can I get the parts? Do you know much it would run? (Personally I enjoy rebuilding them anyway) |

IMPCO has a variety of rebuild kits available for the 240D. I considered doing all these to my 83 240D, but don't have anyplace to do it right now. The apartment manager frowns on people working on their cars in the parking lot; I'm sure he would not appreciate me pulling the engine out in the lot. Maybe when I move, I'll get someplace with a garage...
Anyway, my latest IMPCO catalog has the following kits: Lower engine kit, about $920. Includes pistons, with rings, wrist pins, and clips; piston liners; connecting rod bolts & nuts; rod bearing set; main bearing set; thrust bearings (if applicable); wrist pin bushings; oil pump w/ chain; lower gasket set; flywheel bolts; front crank seal spacer. Camshaft kit, about $400. Includes camshaft, rocker arms, valve springs, valve cap nuts, and valve lock nuts. Timing chain kit, about $190. Includes timing chain, tensioner, all rails, and idler, cam, and crankshaft gears. Head kit, about $220. Includes head gasket set, exhaust & intake valves & guedes, and valve stem seal kit. IMPCO's phone number is 800-243-1220. I got the timing chain kit and am going to drive to my dad's place to do it this weekend since I'll have 3 days (labor day). I'll let ya'll know how it goes. It doesn't look so hard, according to the service manual. - Nathan '83 240D, 250,000 miles. |

How do you know you're getting a rebuildable engine? It could be as bad or even worse as your old one.

Thank you for your responses. I bought a hoist today. I'm very excited about this project!
I'll try to post a website to let everyone see how its done. I'm a below average mechanic who is very stubborn. I've done a Volvo Diesel and RX7 rotary. Tonight I'm very happy because I have the same excitement at 40 that I had when I was 18 and just starting this hobby. BENZMAC should be proud of his Turbo V-8, but I'll be 10x proud if I can pull this off! Respectfully, Richard Chang ------------------ |

That we do, heir Benzmac...
The part number for the W123 CD-ROM is: P-2700-123-098 It's $99.00 + shipping. These have been VERY popular. We only have 2 or 3 left from the shipment we received 2 weeks ago. ------------------ Bill Wood - Webmaster MercedesShop.com, LLC |

Engine turns out to be in very good shape. Pulled the oil pan--there was good oil in it. Found no water which you usually find in Junkyard engines with open holes. Tomorrow plan to stick borescope in intake and injector holes to see upper block condition. *)()(#$^% This engine is HEAVY!!!
