2.6 engine into a 300TE?

I've got an '89 300TE with a tired motor. Can I easily install a 2.6 engine?

I believe they used the same Bosch fuel injection system.

I don't see any obvious reason why it wouldn't fit, but I'm not really a mechanic. I just stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

You will almost certainly need the 2.6's

complete electronics package to make the motor happy in its new environment. It's very unlikely that you could just link up a 2.6 to all the computer engine and transmission management stuff that came with your car.

You probably need to keep the motor wed to its original transmission, too.

And then there are all those thousands of unexpected little details which make any hot rodding project so interesting, exciting, and expensive.

The engine would be a "direct" bolt-in!
Have gone the other direction several times for MORE HP!
Only real problem would be getting out of the way.
Might have to slightly lean out the mixture but that is about all.
