W124 Fuel Pump Relay???
Hi All
My grandad tells me that he hears a humming sound go on for a couple of seconds after he switches off his ignition on his '89 W124 200E. It seems to come from the fuel cap side of the car. Could this be the fuel pump, and if so, is it a sign of a fuel pump relay going south? I haven't yet made time to take look at it to get more info on the symptoms but that is pretty much his worry. Any help would be appreciated. Tks a heap, guys.

Three times now I have heard a short series of humming/harmonica sounds from that area. Sometimes it is accompanied by a sound like liquid boiling in a pan from that same location when the key is first turned on. It happened 3 days in a row during a spell of warm dry weather. My tech says he thinks the fuel accumulator may be developing a bad spring or diapraghm leak problem. It hasn't done it since the temperatures cooled down, so I haven't been able to chase it down any further.

Not disputing at all that it could be the fuel pump(s), mine make a slight CONSTANT hum that seems to be getting a bit louder with time. The OCCASIONAL harmonica note is something new on mine, and just thought I would throw out some alternate suggestions!

Come to think of it, he did mention it getting a little louder than when he noticed it earlier.
Hmmm..... J.H. - I'm not sure 'bout 124s but i think a safe bet would be to swap out the fuel pump and see how it goes (b4 it conks out!). JCE - On my 190e, when I first turn the key to position II, there is a hiss (yep, like liquid sizzlin' in a pan); and I know for a fact that it's the pump. But there ain't no music playin' when I switch it off... I wonder if that's normal on a 190e;and i'm talkin' 'bout EVERYTIME i turn the key...so far no probs except the occasional stalling..Fuel pump relay and OVP relay swapped out but to no avail. Could the pump on my 190e be flyin' north? Any thoughts? Tks for quick replies.

M-B fuel pumps make a humming noise when they approach failure point. Sometimes the humming would stay constant and not too loud, meaning that you may squezze some time out of the pump.
When the noise increases up to point that is easily audible form inside the car, it is time to change the fuel pumps, fast!

Yikes!
I just got off the phone with my grandad and YES, he does hear the hum from within before he exits the car!!! Quick, quick, quick...

The fuel pump (s) stop when the car is switched off. If they continue to run then you have a switch problem. With the car switched off, any noise from the gas tank filler area is likely due to a bad seal on the gas cap. The fuel system is pressurized under normal conditions. Notice how air escapes when you remove the cap each time you fuel up.
