Do Ineed a special tool/socket for C230 oil filter?

I am buying a 1998 C230 today!!!!!!!!!!! I want to change the oil this weekend. My impression is I need a special MB socket to get the filter off. Is this true? Is this a canister type or is it a spin on?

I was lucky to get the repair orders from the dealer that worked on the car. I noticed things such as solvent and a ring for parts every time the oil was changed. Any one know what these might be? I gottta get the Haynes manual this week.

I have the oil filter tool, as it's cheap (>$20) and works really well. Try to remove the filter without bending the small wiring harness right above it. It's a bit of a trick, but easy with practice.

The tool I bought required a 22mm socket, and my set didn't have one, so I bought one too.

It's possible to remove the filter without it, even by hand if your grip strength is up to it, but like the tool.

The dealer looked at me like I was nuts when I bought it. "You own oil changes? Are you nuts, man? It's a Mercedes! No one works on their late model Mercedes themselves..."

get the MB oil filter tool, I paid around eleven dollars. that plastic cap spins off and the filter snaps off the plastic cap, there is a rubber gasket that comes with the MB OEM filter. There is also a copper gasket for the drain plug, if you use that method, and not a suction device.
On my car the oil filter cap leaked and I purchased a new one for a few dollars at the dealer.

I have the same car, really nice. The Haynes manual is a UK version but is I believe essential and helpful.
