300e wiper blade insert

How do you change the wiper blade insert on a 87 300e? Does the rubber insert just slide off?

There is a shiny metal "jaw" on one end that keeps the rubber insert in place. You can do this with just your hands to crimp the jaw and allow the entire insert to slide off.

Note that not all inserts are created equal, so be very certain that you are purchasing the correct size.

It is easier to just buy the whole wiper assembly, but I like the OEM units...if you look closely, the vehicle model is embossed on the top!

Unless yours is different than mine, it just simply snaps out. Fold the wiper assembly forward, then grasp the blade insert and pull straight away from the blade. The new one just pops into place. No tools required or even desired. This is a fifteen second job per side.

Good luck,

I recently changed mine using a genuine Mercedes insert. Prior to that I had used a Bosch one. The Bosch insert was trickier as it came with only the rubber insert and I had to re-use the existing metal strips. However, the Mercedes insert came with the rubber wiper strip and the metal tension strips already in place and little yellow plastic snaps that were holding the whole thing together.

So I simply yanked the old rubber/metal inserts out and the new Mercedes one slipped in easily. As I slid it into place, the yellow clips just pop off. 45 second job. The Bosch insert took me a good 5 minutes...

you could install a silicone triple edge wiper. I've installed them on both of my benzes and love them, no more streaking or leaving black lines on the windshield. They've been on both cars for over a year and a half and so far are still working great.

Zeus,

What replacement blade do you like better...Bosch or MB OEM...any other? I ususally just buy the MB with the Plastic/Metal - full wiper w/blade.

Well, the Bosch served me well and the new MB blade is also working perfectly. I do prefer the MB insert simply because of the ease of installation. I now keep a new MB spare insert packaged in my trunk. It's nice to know I can change it quickly in the event I have to replace the existing one on the side of a highway in a snowstorm in the middle of winter...

Just a note about MB Wiper Refills, I went to my dealer to purchase a refill for my 400E, and the parts guy told me that MB will no longer offer the refill with the metal strips, just good old plastic. Another effort to reduce cost and quality!

Timreid,

How do you like your 400E? I started looking around for one 92-95 ...can you get them with the rear shade option?

Jay, I remember when I bought my 400E, my sales friend Frank asked me to drive this other old Mercedes, I still haven't forgiven him, it was a 500E. Children in college etc. and my wife giving me that certain look, so we drove home in the 400E. With in a few months I added the 500E bars, Euro lights, super chip, and yes I love my 400E. You know the Mercedes quality on the 124 bodies, to me it's a very good car, would I buy a good used one yes, a good used 500E, YES.
I'm not positive, but I believe the shade was not an option for this car.
Enjoy the drive, timreid
