Question '93 300 SL with Digital Odometer?????

Hi,
I’m looking at a ’93 300SL with a manual 5-Speed transmission. The car seems to be in great shape, but something caught me by surprise. This car has a digital odometer. I was under the impression that Mercedes did not start with the digital odometers until late ’94 on the ’95 models, but then I’m not that familiar with the W129 SL’s.
Is this correct or has the Speedo been replaced? The car only has 53,xxx miles on it and does not seem like it has been modified or tinkered with.
I also did not realize that Mercedes already started using the switchblade keys in ’93.
Anybody have a ’93 W129 SL that has the same digital odometer and keys and can help me put my doubts aside?

Thanks for all of your expert replies!!

The only replacement speedo available now has the digital odometer. I would have to check my notes to see what both of these cars had originally. Check your owners manual, you should have some indication on what they had originally by looking through the appropriate owners manual.

Send the VIN to me at "waybomb@nconnect.net" and I'll run a CARFAX report for you. My month CARFAX of service ends 6JAN03.

Thanks for the inputs. The VIN# is: WDBFA61E5PF084004. I sure would appreciate a Car Fax, the records indicate that it's a one owner car that was purchased in Kentucky and then titled in Florida.
Thanks again for the help! My email is db@intercorp.com.

Don't think the digital odo is more tamper proof than the old fashioned mechanical jobbies.

They are not. There is whole industry known as "clockers" than reset digital odos.

Verify the mileage through service records, emissions test, car fax, etc. Use all of them.

Some investigator in our area did some research on a group of used cars on dealer lots, and found 1 in 3 with tampered odos...

The 93's came with the old style odometers. The digital type is the only type that has been available for quite some time. When ordering these, the mileage must be given(although I'm not sure how accuracy is verified) so that the replacement unit reads the same as the old one.

Tony, the reason you don't have the digital odometer is because it's the original! If you ever need to replace your instrument cluster the new odometer will be digital.
