Sloppy Shifter
The shifter in my '88 300SE seems to be getting very clunky when I move the shifter between Park, Reverse, Nuetral, Drive, etc. I think it's linkage related - but I'm not sure. My fear is that one day I won't be able to get it into Park and hence be able to start the vehicle.
Any thoughts out there on what the problem may be?? Thanks, Paul |

Couple different places that the bushings wear. Put the car on ramps and climb underneath with a flash light. Look at the rod that goes to the side of the tranny to the bottom of the rod from the shifter location. There are plastic/nylon bushings at each end. When these wear it does get sloppy. I am working on an SD model now that has a pretty sloppy feeling shifter. When I took a look at it this evening I found the slop to be in the shifter bushing itself. I am going to have to get out my parts picture to ascertain the exact bushing that is worn on this one. The bushings at the ends of the rod looked good.

Bushings are it!
Cheap fix. If you do it yourself. Less than $10.
