dim glow on warning light panel lights

1990 300E 2.6 gas - suddenly last winter I began getting dim lights out of the warning lights on the dash from the battery light on over through the burned-out-bulb light. This is speed related. They all seem to work normally other than this glow - naturally appear much brighter at night. Voltage regulator doing this? Also, the AM side of the radio is affected noticeably. Can I just change the voltage regulator or do I have to put in another new altenator, too? Yes, I read the other recent thread along this line.

Thanks much

Also, I use Havoline 10/40 oil. Anyone ever have a problem here? Change it and filter every 3-4,000 miles

Sounds more like a ground problem than an alternator problem to me.

I believe there is a large bolt somewhere on the steering column that attaches the ground wiring from the dash cluster. That may be the first place to look.

Check your battery with a voltmeter with engine off, then on. Should be 11.5 - 12V off, and 13.5 to 14.4V when on (accessories off).

dim dash warning lights

Thank you for the information on the grounding wire. I was just under the car and cannot find the one to which you were referring. Is it quite a ways up the steering collumn?
