Instrument cluster removal in CLK430

Has anyone here removed the instrument cluster on a 1999 CLK430 or similar?

I have the MB pull hooks, and am able to fish the cluster out, but there just isn't enough clearance to remove the cluster because of the steering wheel.

I have tried extending the steering wheel all the way, but it is still about 1" too tight. Is there any trick to do this without removing the wheel?

Furthermore, if I try to push the cluster back into place, I encounter a LOT of resistance. Using moderate force, it does not want to get flush with the dash again. Any tricks to this as well?

Finally, if I must remove the steering wheel, can anyone walk me through this? I do not have access to the WIS manual and could not find any information regarding this online.

Thanks!
